“How many times a week should I do CrossFit” is one of the first questions new members ask, and a sensible one. Training frequency affects your progress, your recovery, and ultimately whether you stick with it long-term. Here’s a practical guide based on your goals and experience level.

If You’re Just Starting Out: 2–3 Classes Per Week

When you’re new to CrossFit, your body is adapting to movements and intensity it hasn’t experienced before. Completing two to three classes per week gives you enough stimulus to improve quickly while allowing adequate recovery between sessions. However, you can still come to the gym every day! We offer FREE open gym as part of your membership, meaning you can use the gym during open hours to complete active recovery, mobility or even rehab exercises on days you aren’t participating in the class. With our massive floor space (704m2) and wide range of equipment, you will always have the space to complete your own training/rehab, even during our busiest times.
Trying to complete the class every day as a beginner is often too much volume for new members to handle at first — it can lead to excessive soreness, fatigue, and sometimes burnout. Completing 2-3 classes and 1-2 active recovery sessions per week is the perfect balance for beginners.

Starting with this volume of training will show noticeable results within the first few week as well as allow for better consistency long-term.

For General Health and Fitness: 3–4 Times Per Week

Once you’ve settled in and your body has adapted to CrossFit training, three to four classes per week is a solid sweet spot for most people. You’re training enough to make meaningful progress in strength and fitness, while still recovering well between sessions. You still have the option to add in a recovery/mobility session each week, whether that be on a separate day to your CrossFit classes, or as an added day during the week.

This is the range where most of our members sit — and it’s very compatible with a busy life. You don’t need to be in the gym every day to get great results.

For Performance and Competition Goals: 4–5+ Times Per Week

If you’re training with a competitive goal in mind — the CrossFit Open, a Hyrox event, or local competitions — you’ll likely be training four to five or more times per week, supplemented by open gym sessions for extra skill work and accessory training. The programming is written in a way that allows the more experienced and committed members to attend 4-5 times a week without overtraining certain muscle groups. To complete this number of sessions each week you will need to have spent some time gradually increasing your overall training volume to ensure your body has had enough time to adapt and become conditioned to this level of training. Active recovery and mobility sessions are important for those looking to maintain this training load long-term.

At City 4051, our free open gym and 24/7 access make this easy to manage without requiring a separate gym membership or an elaborate schedule.

Recovery Matters as Much as Training

Whatever frequency you choose, recovery is not optional. Sleep, nutrition, and rest days are where adaptation happens — the gym creates the stimulus, but your body rebuilds stronger when you’re resting and refuelling. Prioritising sleep and eating enough protein will amplify the results of your training significantly. We have highly qualified staff at City 4051 CrossFit including Nutritionists and other allied health professionals who can help guide you in your recovery and nutrition.

Consistency Beats Frequency Every Time

Here’s the most important thing: three sessions per week every week beats five sessions per week for a month followed by burnout and two weeks off. Consistency is the single biggest predictor of results in fitness.

Our coaching philosophy at City 4051 is built around this idea. We design workouts to be challenging and enjoyable so that members actually want to come back. Because when you enjoy training, consistency takes care of itself. Not sure where to start? Come in for a free week trial and have a chat with one of our coaches.
