If you’ve been curious about CrossFit but haven’t taken the plunge yet, chances are you have some questions — or some reservations. That’s completely normal. CrossFit has a reputation that can seem intimidating for those who haven’t done CrossFit before. Let’s work through the most common concerns honestly.

Do I Need to Be Fit Before I Start?

No. This is the most common misconception about CrossFit. You don’t need to ‘get fit’ before you join — It’s our job to help you get fit. Every workout at City 4051 is scaled to suit your current ability. That means the movements, the weights, and the intensity are adjusted so that a complete beginner and an experienced athlete can do the same class and both get a great workout.

Almost everyone who joins at City 4051 CrossFit in Chermside have never done CrossFit before. Our coaches are very experienced at helping beginners ease into the gym and teaching the correct technique in a safe and pressure free environment.

Will I Get Injured?

Any form of exercise carries some risk of injury, but CrossFit done well — with proper coaching and sensible progression — is no more dangerous than any other training. Injury rates in CrossFit are lower than a lot of popular training regimes including running and field-based sports. In fact, the coaching-heavy environment of CrossFit means technique is prioritised over ego. Our coaches watch your movement patterns and correct issues before they become problems. We also encourage members to leave their ego at the door and scale appropriately.

I’m Not Young and Athletic — Is This Still for Me?

Absolutely. At City 4051, we have grandparents who train regularly and love it. Age is not a barrier. CrossFit is infinitely scalable — movements can be modified for mobility limitations, previous injuries, or fitness level. Many of our older members have found CrossFit to be the most enjoyable and effective training they’ve ever done. CrossFit is also great for slowing age-related decline helping with things like:

  • Improve and maintain bone mineral density
  • Improve and maintain lean muscle mass
  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Improve Cardiovascular health
  • Slow cognitive decline
  • Improve mental health and wellbeing

Is It Too Intense for a Beginner?

It can look intense from the outside. But in a well-run box, intensity is relative to the individual. Your version of a workout is not the same as a competitive athlete’s version — and that’s by design. You’ll work hard, but you won’t be destroyed. And over time, what felt hard becomes your new normal. At City 4051 CrossFit we encourage beginners to leave their first few classes feeling as if they had plenty left in the tank. Intensity can be gradually increased as members become more comfortable with the style of training and the technique. View our beginner page to see the different trial options available for members who are new to CrossFit.

What If I Can’t Do Certain Movements?

Every movement in CrossFit has modifications and progressions. Can’t do a pull-up yet? No problem — there are scaled versions that build the strength you need to get there. Our coaches are experienced at meeting members where they are and helping them progress over time.

Will I Fit In?

The culture at City 4051 is one of the things our members consistently mention when they talk about why they stay. We have students, grandparents, shift workers, parents, couples, and competitive athletes all training together. Nobody cares how fast you are or how much you lift — they care that you show up and give it your best. City 4051 CrossFit is a place where you can be yourself and feel completely comfortable.
